The 38th Annual CAPN Meeting will take place at Portland State University in Portland, OR on April 3-4, 2009.
Call for Papers:
We invite papers on any aspect of Graeco-Roman antiquity; especially welcome are papers that are likely to be of broad interest and make connections among the different elements of the ancient world. Such connections can be between Greek society and Roman society, between different disciplines such as literature and history, or between different genres of literature. Teachers and students of the Classics at any level of instruction (K-12, college, or university) may submit abstracts; all papers will be judged anonymously by the Program Committee, chaired by CAPN President Karen Carr.
Abstracts of no more than 200 words should be submitted by email to this address (carrk@pdx.edu). The deadline for submissions, which was originally set at December 15th, 2008, has been extended to January 15th, 2009. You should receive a response by mid-February.
The keynote address will be delivered on Friday evening by Professor E. Hector Williams of the University of British Columbia on the topic "Goddesses, Whores, Vampyres and Archaeologists: Excavating Ancient Mytilene (Lesbos)." Professor Williams directs UBC’s archaeological projects at Stymphalos and Mytilene (Lesbos) in Greece; he has also worked for ten seasons at UBC’s excavations at Anemurium in Turkey and with the University of Pennyslvania’s Gordion Project and the University of Chicago’s excavations at Kenchreai, eastern port of Corinth.
We are pleased to be able to add that on Saturday before lunch, Ursula Le Guin will be reading from her new book, Lavinia.
