(MORE) NEWS FROM MEMBERS

(Editor's note: Our apologies for inadvertently omitting the news from Boise State in the fall edition of the Bulletin.)

Boise State University

Alan Brinton, former Chair of the Department of Philosophy and a specialist on ancient rhetoric (he has published several articles on Cicero and Quintilian), has been named Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at BSU. An interdisciplinary "Major in History - Classical Studies" is being proposed this fall, and should be available alongside the currently offered "Minor in Latin Language & Literature" at BSU next year. The classical studies courses are filled this fall, with 50 in the Ancient Greece history class, and 40 in the first year Latin class.
Charles Odahl, Professor of Ancient History and Coordinator of Classical Languages, is having a busy year. His textbook on Early Christian Latin Literature (Chicago: Ares Publishers, Inc.) came out last fall and is available for $30.00. He presented an expanded version of his paper/slide presentation on "God and Constantine: Divine Sanction for Imperial Rule in the First Christian Emperor's Early Letters and Art" before a joint session of the American Catholic Historical Association and American Society of Church History national conferences at the AHA Conference in the San Francisco Hilton Hotel last January -- it has been accepted for publication in a future edition of The Catholic Historical Review; and he chaired a session on "Architectural Forms in Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages" at the Rocky Mountain Medieval and Renaissance Association Conference last May at the Jackson Hole Snow King Lodge. He has reviewed Norman Cohn, Cosmos, Chaos and the World to Come -- The Ancient Roots of Apocalyptic Faith (Yale, 1993), and Steven Drummond and Lynn Nelson, The Western Frontiers of Imperial Rome (Sharpe, 1994) for the journal The Historian; and is reviewing T.D. Barnes, From Eusebius to Augustine (Variorum, 1994), and Michael Grant, Constantine the Great--The Man and His Times (Scribners, 1993) for The Catholic Historical Review. His detailed article on "The Christian Basilicas of Constantinian Rome" is scheduled to be published with 45 illustrations in The Ancient World, Vol. XXVI, 1 (spring 1995) -- an issue which will be focused on Constantine and Late Antiquity. Finally, Odahl will be leading and guiding an 18 day study tour entitled "Ancient Capitals and Sacred Sites in Italy and Turkey" this coming May 16 - June 2. It will include 7 days in Rome and a day in Pompeii in the West, and 7 days in Constantinople (Istanbul) and a day in Nicaea (Iznik) in the East, with a focus upon the religious transformation of the Roman world in Late Antiquity.
